Focus: How does the present dictate our vision of the future?

1. Warming up: Have you submitted your essay to www.turnitin.com? How'd it go?

2. Reviewing fishbowl expectations and enjoying a 20 minute impromptu fishbowl discussion of yesterday's statements and of "Harrison Bergeron"

3. Signing up for leader and discusser dates for the F451 fishbowls, if time allows

Do you still have your blue (or green) bookmarks?

4. Checking out F451 and exploring the first few pages together

HW:
1. Banned books need to be finished by Monday. Bring them to class tomorrow for your last day of reading time.

2. We will have a short (and hopefully quite easy) quiz on verb tense tomorrow.

3. Please click here for an important letter for your parents regarding P-T conferences (hard copy sent home as well).

  1. On every team, every kid should get to play every position:

Agree and disagree, at a young age everyone should get to play every position but once you get older and want to win then this could become a big problem. In high school this would be a problem because they are some people who aren’t as good at different positions as their position.

  2. Is there a difference between treating everyone equally and everyone being equal? Which is better in your opinion?

    1. Being equal is being the same as everyone else, like having the same amount of money, house etc. Being treated equally means that no one is discriminated against and everyone has equal opportunity.

  3. I agree with Andrew that without score the game is not as fun because there is no competition.

  4. I like the comment about how it takes out the competitiveness of the game so we should keep score.

  5. Keeping score creates competition teaching kids about life.

  6. I most definitely think we should keep score of young kids sport's games. Even if score is not kept, kids will still be arguing who is winning. It is just all part of the competitiveness and fun.

  7. I agree with Andrew and Chase that if you don't have the score its not going to help you in life and you have to just push yourself.

  8. I agree with Chase I think the parents make the sports about themselves more then the kids sometimes.

  9. I think that in Canada every one is probably a soar looser so they dont want kids to loose.

  10. One of the biggest reasons we play sports is for the competition, keeping score has been a part of sports since they were invented, so why would you want to change it? If you don't keep score then some kids will never realize what it's like to lose and have to work for improvement.

  11. Sports teach life lessons. The actual sport doesn't but working hard to try and win and how to never quit even if you lose so if you take the score away then it becomes less serious.

  12. Kids should play a couple of different positions to find which one they like then they should stay with that position.

  13. Should everyone be treated equally?
Agree and disagree, If people are treated equally then everyone knows the same thing, everyone speaks and thinks the same thing. People would not be different from one another creating to individuality. It would be incredibly easy to persuade everyone into believing one thing. But, if everyone is treated equally and knows the truth, then it is perfectly fine. Everyone will know that truth and wont be jealous of one another. It could create leveled equality.

  14. I think the reason it's illegal to keep score in Canada for a certain age because of how American teams who go to Canada to play hockey get beat so bad that they decide to stop keeping score due to how unfair the competition is.

  15. I think they should keep score because if they never kept score and as soon as they get old enough to keep score they will be very mad when they loose because they will have never lost before and don't know how to deal with loosing. Also if they don't keep score they wont try as hard to try to win so they wont be as good at the sport as someone else who has kept score.

  16. The kids should play every position and decide which one they want to specialize in and grow on.

  17. I think that every one should have at least a little experience in each position just in case someone else doesn't want to do that position and you have to.

  18. I agree with Chase, I think it is a wonderful idea to have a league for any age where you just join and have fun, with it not being too competitive.

  19. I think when kids are under 7, it is okay to not keep score. At that age they are mostly just playing for fun and don't really have that competitive spirit that AC was talking about yet. From 7-10 years old, kids start to get that competitive drive and really want to win. At that point, it is a good thing to keep score so that their sport can become more competitive like they are ready for.

  20. I think it would be good for people who just want to try to go to league where it is the same kind of people there that just want to try the sport out.

  21. I think it was the perfect time to bring up the question about if kids should be able to play every position.

  22. I agree with Chase it is easier to play more than one sport. I play two sports and it was tough before high school and there was a lot of conflicts but now that I just play high school it is so much easier. The coaches want you to play other sports for the school and there are no conflicts anymore.

  23. I personally think there should be leagues where no score is kept but there should also be more competitive leagues for the kids who like to know if they win or not.

  24. I agree, I think it does get easier the older you get, because the choice is mainly put on yourself, with less input from your parents.

  25. I think they should keep score because if they never kept score and as soon as they get old enough to keep score they will be very mad when they loose because they will have never lost before and don't know how to deal with loosing.
