All Boys, All Blogged: January 26, 2015

Focus: What pushes a person over the edge?

1. Warming up with happy Monday thoughts

2. Discussing symbolic choices in the film and finishing the film version of Act 2; trying your hand at an Act 2 "quiz"

3. Setting up Act 3 for your acting companies by reading all scene summaries and deciding on a plot level and a deeper meaning level what each scene is about.

Acting Company #1: Act 3, scene 1, lines 1-51 ("Bring them before us")
Acting Company #2: Act 3, scene 1, lines 52 ("To be thus is nothing) - end of scene.
Acting Company #3: Act 3, scene 2 (all)
Acting Company #4: Act 3, scene 3 (all)
Acting Company #5: Act 3, scene 4, lines 1-103 ("Than such a murder is.")
Acting Company #6: Act 3, scene 4, lines 104 ("My worthy lord") - end of scene.

HW:
1. If you did not finish in class, finish reading all Act 3 scene summaries and establishing what each is about on a plot level and a deeper meaning level.

2. Check your word trace entries for feedback; continue adding to them as you read Act 3 (remember that by the end of the play, you should have 8-10 entries).

  1. I think the director chose to show the murder to express Macbeth's emotions and reactions to doing that action.

  2. The director showed us the murder scene to intensify the drama and volume of guilt felt by Macbeth and the audience. Also he probably felt it was best to show us what actually went down so we could know more about Macbeth during this scene.

  3. I think that he chose to show this scene because he wanted the audience to have less sympathy for MacBeth. He wanted to show that he had inner drive to kill Duncan as well.

  4. I think the director chose to show us the scene to display how violent and insane Macbeth was. To show that he changed from not really wanting to kill him to doing it very brutally.

  5. Roman Polanski decided to show the murder of king Duncan because its a important pivot point in the whole plot of the play. Most likely after this event we see the further decay of Macbeth's mental state.

  6. I think the director included the murder scene in his film because it was such an important part, the turning point of Macbeth's inner actions. It is an essential part for showing how evil is taking over.

  7. I think that the director chose to show the murder of King Duncan because it really shows how Macbeth is changing and how his mental state is starting to become very unstable.

  8. The director chose to show this scene because it had no words to it. It would be very confusing if they didn't show it because it's what sparks the play. It is the most significant part so why not show it?

  9. I think he used the murder scene to show the last bit of Macbeth's honor leaving him. All of his honor and bravery was killed along with Duncan.

  10. The director chose to show the murder to represent how power has changed Macbeth. Helps show that Macbeth is a changed person and his wife is behind it. He has become power hungry.

  11. I think that he showed us this scene because it is a very important part of the play. I think he did it just to show it visually and people like to see things in movies or plays instead of just thinking about it. It just makes the play seem more visual for the audience and that is why I think he chose to put this scene in his version of the play.

  12. I think that the murder scene was shown in the movie because there is really no reason that it should be left out. If there is something happening that all of readers know is happening but it doesn't show is happening then well that doesn't make sense

  13. To show the fear of Duncan and the feeling of him getting betrayed that he portrayed when he was being murdered. Also it could show how crazed Macbeth was and that he really didn't want to do it, yet he did it anyway.

  14. I think Roman Polanski chose to show the murder scene to show us how Macbeth is changing because of his want for power and the peer pressure from his wife and the three witches.

  15. I believe that if the murder wasn't shown then there wouldn't be any shock value, since every movie and story should have a shock value it helps to express the feelings of the story and what is really happening to Macbeth as a person.

  16. I think the director choose to show the murder because he wanted to really show how Macbeth was feeling. The director also wanted to show that Macbeth is not really what people think of him. He is a loyal man to the king then he kills the king.

  17. I think he showed the scene to maybe remind the watcher how crazed and insane Macbeth is. This would mean that the director of the film version believes that Macbeth wants the one that murdered Duncan but rather a higher power or curse possessed him and made him do it.

  18. Roman Polanski chose to show the scene because its a movie about someone who murders people, so he was showing us what Macbeth really is.

  19. I think the director showed the murder scene to make the movie more interesting and exciting. Also I think he put it in because that is one of the most important parts of the play so why skip over it.

  20. I think the movie director chose to show us the murder scene because in a book you can get more emotionally attached with words while the movie doesn't give off the same emotions as the book. I think this scene helped express Macbeths emotions and how he reacts to killing King Duncan.

  21. I think he choose to show the murder scene because it is symbolic to the dagger hallucination.

  22. the directer thought teh movie would be boring without all the death on screeen

  23. I think Roman Polanski shows the murder scene because, he wants to show how Macbeth has turned into a whole new person. The scene could also show Macbeth's good side because he is very hesitant to kill the king at first. Obviously he chose the lower path.

  24. I think he showed the murder scene so that he could show how Macbeth was struggling with the decision right up until the end. It looked like Macbeth wasn't going to do it when he was lowering his hand, but the Duncan woke up and Macbeth was almost forced to do it. He couldn't go back once Duncan had seen him.

  25. I think that the director chose to show us the murder scene because he wanted to show that Duncan was the only one who really knew who was going to kill him. He also wanted to show how gruesome Macbeth actually is, and also how Macbeth will do anything to get what he wants.

  26. I think Roman Polanski wanted to show the murder of King Duncan because he wanted his version of the play to be much darker than Shakespeare's. Shakespeare on the other hand, called his play a tragedy, and wanted the audience to feel bad for Macbeth, that is why Roman Polanski shows the murder of Duncan.

  27. I think the author decided to show the murder scene because it was necessary to show the viewer how MacBeth was a different person. He was Hesitant to kill Duncan And that shows that he might have some good energy in him left.

  28. I think that the author chose to show the murder of King Duncan to demonstrate that Macbeth is not just a good person who made a mistake, but truly a bad person. Macbeth is just becoming further engulfed by the darkness of power and violence.
