All Boys, All Blogged: March 10, 2015

Focus: In dystopian societies, what do people care about? What don't they care about?

1. Warming up with a breakdown of the word "dystopia" and two dystopian film clips

a. The Hunger Games
b. Divergent
  • What are the teenagers like in these societies?
  • What are the adults like?
  • What do people care about?
  • What don't people care about?
Looking at your responses above, make one connection between each film clip and the teenagers/adults/society/morals of the characters in F451. Consider both similarities and differences.

2. Enjoying Fishbowl #3: F451, pages 40-63

3. Wrapping up

HW:
1. Please read pages 63-80 in F451 and complete one side of your green observation chart/reading journal by this Friday. I will likely collect your observation charts on Friday.

2. Work on your book talk and be ready to go on your presentation date.

3. This Friday we will have a vocabulary quiz over F451 words 1 through 15 ("abstracted" through "fold").

  1. Do you think that clarisse died because of what montag did

    1. I believe she died to give Montag a spark, a will to do something that will help the cause of saving books which is something that clarisse would support.

    2. I think it was just like she said they kill each other. I think that is what happened to her.

  2. What Made Clarice such a pivotal character?

    1. Clarice changed Montag's view and opinion on life. She is the one who led him to his curiosity about past life.

    2. Clarisse is such a pivotal character because she opens Montag's eyes to the harsh reality of the society he lives in. I think he has always had underlying doubts about the society, but he never questioned it until Clarisse talked to him.

    3. Clarisse was such a pivotal character because she changed the way Montag thinks about the world he lives in and the job he does.

    4. I believe Clarisse is such an important character in this series because she is a symbol of everything Montag will become, and the one who allowed Montag to undergo a self-examination. She is a foil of Mildred because she is thinking, while Mildred is devoid of thought, and Montag is astounded people like Mildred rule the country. Even after she disappears, her thoughts of individuality will still remain on in Montag.

  3. "When did we meet and where" said Montag. "Why it was- I don't know" said Mildred. Why would Montags wife not remember how they meet or where when they only have been together for 10 years?

    1. "He took the mechanical bug out of her ear"... it would even seem that she doesn't care at all.

    2. I think that it may be that the government arranges marriages in this society. It doesn't seem like they love each other, they just put up with each other.

    1. It shows they don't live in the past and the government controls that.

    2. Mildred, in this story, shows the reader what the average joe in the story is like. Her characteristics are vacant, insipid, and obsessed with television and the only eyebrow-raising thing she did was attempt suicide. It could be like what Montag says, that she kept forgetting she was taking sleeping pills because she forgot she took one before, or it could show that society are people are deeply unhappy and bothered by that fact that their goals in life are done, so Mildred being the cover boy of the dystopian life, attempted suicide. This is an idea, because when the men who pumped her stomach came in, they said they had ten other cases like this. Coincidence? I think not.

    1. I think that she just sparked his interests and made him question the society.

    2. I think Montag if anything wants to learn more no that Clarisse is dead and he probably is very curious of how Clarisse's death.

  6. What do you think Clarisse's death symbolizes? Do you think it was potentially a murder?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think that it may also represent the death of Montag's past. He seems to have no desire to return the fire station nor does he seem to want to be a part of the normal lifestyle in this society.

  7. Why do you think Clarisse was brought into the story if she was just going to get killed off 50 pages in?

  8. Why did Mildred hold back from telling Montag about Clarisse's death since she didn't tell him about it for four days.

    1. maybe she was told not to tell montag

  9. What do you think makes fireman stop feeling bad about burning books?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because it has been something they do for a long time and it is a way of life. I feel they do kinda wonder why they are burning this stuff.

  11. Do you think Clarice was killed on purpose or by accident?

    ReplyDelete

    1. If she was killed on purpose that could give Montag a reason to fight the government.

    2. I think it was on accident surprising montag making him feel more remorse

  12. Do you think Captain Beatty is a government official? Has the government told him what to say to people?

  13. montag is only starting to rebel do you think that he will start rebelling in more juristic ways

  14. What separates a follower from a leader?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mildred doesn't apparently have any real family, so the characters on her TV shows have become her "relatives." Sad.

  16. Do you think that Montag will continue his career as a firefighter?

  17. Why do you think Captain Beatty knows so much about the history of books? (pg 54-57)

    3. I don't think Montag is the only person/fireman who has secretly read books before. I wouldn't be shocked if other people did the same thing

  18. "books cut shorter, condensation, digests, tabloids, everything boils down to the gag, the snap ending." What does this show about present day and the technology and the effects it has on tabloids, digests and everything else.

  19. On page 58, Captain Beatty quotes,"No everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy...." How does this show this societies government system and beliefs?

  20. The relatives are people on the television. I don't think that they are actual relatives of Mildred on the TV and I don't know if people know their true relatives at all. It sounded like relationships between children and parents is nearly non-existent as kids are put in school almost right after they're born.

  22. Does Mildred represent the normal adult in this society? If yes, how so?

  23. What affect will the idea of love have on this story?

    ReplyDelete
  24. In what ways are the government officials controlling the people to their advantage?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. By keeping most people so invested on basic entertainments such as TV and the radio, I think the government keeps people from thinking too deeply about how they're actually living. By doing this, the government doesn't have to worry about creating a better place for their citizens, instead, they just have to worry about providing enough "happiness" to keep people quiet.

  25. How do people in this book choose who they want to marry?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think they get setup by there parents or government because I do not think they really like each other. Or they do not have feelings for them.

    2. I don't think they choose, I think they wake up one day and they are married and have jobs.

  26. Do you think that when Mildred got her blood drawn, it made her loose her memory?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think it's a possibility, but maybe she does remember her attempted suicide but she's to afraid to speak about it. The society shows everyone as very happy and well-off, and being anything but that is shown as being unsuccessful. Why would she want to put herself in that position by admitting her unhappiness and lack of emotion when she could instead lie about it and act happy like so many do in our world today?

  27. Is montage the only person who has these thoughts about life and the books value?

    1. Most likely not, if you look at any huge movement in human history, it starts with one person who speaks out, then like minded people will follow.

  28. Why don't more people in this society realize what the government is trying to do...brainwash

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think everyone is just super ignorant, and they all are too unhappy to care about a lot of things

      Delete
    2. Because they have be brain washed since birth so they can't really realize what is going on. But there are probably lots of people like Clarisse and Montag who have figured it out but there are not enough to go against the Government and win.

      Delete
    3. Because they have taken away the free agency of people and have taken away the rights. This allows most in this society to do what the government wants them to do.

      Delete
    4. Well, when the first people were brainwashed, they probably tried to resist, however, when the government increased this brainwash by destroying books, their brainwash abilities increased, and eventually, children were becoming brainwashed, by being brainwashed by already mind-controlled parents. So that is why they are not fighting back, because mind-control has become a part of their society.

  30. If Montag had not met Clarisse, do you think he would have the same emotions he is currently having?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ya because there is no connection between the two about anything. They show no emotions towards each other.

  31. On page 50 when Montag is talking to Mildred about his day at work he says, "We burned Dante the Swift today." and Mildred responded, "Wasn't he a radical?" Why do you think Mildred automatically assumed that an author was a radical just for putting work into something he likes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the government has convinced her along with many people that any one who expresses emotion through writing or another art form is automatically a bad person or a radical.
